From Boys 2 Men-An Adventure in Paradise

From Boys 2 Men is an unforeseen journey of inspiring adventure, egregious motivations, sexual entanglement, physical adversity and near-death encounters, it was also a learning experience that could not be replicated in any educational institution.

From Boys 2 Men is the audacious tale of two young boys, age seventeen, that leave their parents nest to embark on a surfing safari to Hawaii. Dissatisfied with the poor surfing conditions on Oahu in 1964, they search out better waves in American Samoa, a place they had never before heard of. They leave Samoa on a 78’ inter-island cargo boat and later join a 56’ ketch owned by twenty four year old John. The three youngsters had the sailing adventure that young men only dream of. Episodically sharing those adventures was John’s wife, a nineteen year old Tahitian beauty, in a saga of love on the high seas.

Boat fires in Samoa, a near sinking in Fiji, a major tropical cyclone in Australia, hunting butterflys in Papua’s outback and a gut-wrenching hurricane in the North Atlantic greet them on their serendipitous journey. Life’s lessons taught on a grand scale with players from over fifteen nations.

This book has been written as a motivator to young people to go out and explore the world. In current terminology-Just Do It!, Yes We Can! and Carpe Diem!

A fascinating look at how much the world has changed in the last fifty years. Today, this adventure probably would not be possible. Parents would not allow their sons to set off with little money and no plans to wander around the world. Boat owners would be much less willing to allow two American kids crew their expensive boats.
Yet Marshall and his friend, Charles, did just that in the 1960s. (Disclaimer: I attended high school with Marshall, so I was especially interested in this story.) The book has some issues (shifting POV--from first person plural to third person, sometimes in the same paragraph--along with the need of a good, solid edit). The author paints a picture of two innocents discovering the big world while hunting for good surf a la "Endless Summer."

From Boys 2 Men An Adventure in Paradise eBook Marshall Lubin Reviews

Excellant adventures, great reading for even non sailors. I only wish in my youth I had taken this kind of risk.
Was amazed by this captivating story few people have ever lived. Was an opportunity to relive the sixties and for those who didn't, to learn what it was really like to live on the edge.
A great story of an outstanding life adventure and experience. However, if you are a detail oriented reader as I am, numerous punctuation and grammar errors and some stilted/improper word choices are distracting and detract at times from reading it. Recommended reading, with those caveats.
As a person with a sincere dislike of being in a boat out of view of land, I have to admire Marshall on his voyage, especially at such a young age. What an adventure! Easy to read and it kept my interest throughout the entire book. Not a bad first book. I look forward to more from this author.
Reading From Boys 2 Men invites Marshall Lubin to your kitchen table to share his story over a good cup of Earl Grey Tea. The adventure of growing up and growing apart from the days of our youth is the real story. For Marshall, this took place during his two year global circumnavigation which began as a Hawaiian surfing "safari" in 1964. He and his high school buddy departed LAX with starry eyed dreams of a Hawaiian summer filled with riding the big waves. He could not have imagined that this would be the first leg in a journey into manhood while traveling to unfamiliar tropical islands and beyond. His story is sweetly told and will make you yearn for the time in your life when you seized the moment, jumped on board and let the winds of serendipity take you to your next destination.
Marshall's true story reads like fiction--I couldn't put it down. His fascinating tale of adventure is entertainment at its best and educational to boot. I loved the descriptions of the places he went, the people he met, the boats on which he traveled, the waves he surfed, and the experiences that truly changed him and his buddy Charles from boys to men. It made me envious that I never had the courage (or naivety?) to undertake such a venture. Oh well--I can live vicariously! Thanks for showing us that the world is full of wonderful people no matter where you go, and reminding us that we're all part of the human race. Although times were simpler then, I hope the goodness and openness you encountered are still characteristic of most. I highly recommend this book for anyone--male, female, young, or old. One suggestion, though--you left me wondering what happened to Charles and John and Jeanie after you parted ways. I hope you'll write a sequel! Thanks so much!
Ahhh, the early 60's! The world seems at relative peace (but not for long), Viet Nam was not really a blip on most of our radarscopes, Beach Boys and Beatle music ruled the AM dial, and the surfing lifestyle was sweeping the USA. Life was good for those of us in our teen years, growing up on the southern California Coast. We all poured ourselves into the pages of Surfer Magazine and dreamed of the ultimate surf safari, riding the big waves in Hawaii. Seventeen year old and newly high school graduated Marshall Lubin, along with three friends; strike out to live their dreams with a summer trip to the heavy rollers on Oahu. For Marshall and friend Charles, this becomes the first step into an amazing two-year global adventure of surf, new cultures and customs, great friendships, challenges, new skills and self-discovery. I greatly enjoyed the book and will highly recommend it to friends.
