My name’s Ella Raimi.
Until last week, my life was pretty normal for a sixteen-year-old. Until I spent that awful night trapped in the janitor's closet in utter darkness. Until the dreams began — suffocating, panic-filled dreams. My best friend Kyla stays with me, but the dreams still continue. And I wake each morning with cuts & burns on my skin. I don’t recall inflicting them.
And then there is the blood on my hands and my sheets when I wake up.
I’m afraid of myself.
I'm afraid I am a killer.

The book was interesting and the ending unexpected but sensible. I really enjoyed the psyche references, author knows or researched very well. I decided to get her other two books.

Dark Shadows A Psychological Horror edition by Toni Vallan TG Ayer Mae I Design JC Hart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This dark psychological suspense book is an excellent story that really keeps you hooked - I was up most of the night reading it! With so many twists, you're never quite sure who's responsible, what's real, and what might happen next. And the final twist... Oooh! The only note of caution I'd give those looking to decide whether to read this book is that there are some moments of graphic violence, though they are central to the story (not just shoved in like some books do), and some potential mental health triggers, especially towards the end. I loved this book though, even as a person with mental health issues, and would definitely recommend it to other lovers of psychological suspense stories.
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
This was an interesting read. I was drawn to the cover because it intrigued me. The whole way through I was waiting for the twist. I could feel it coming, and I had my suspicions, but kept changing my mind as to what it might be. I think the author has done a good job at keeping the reader in suspense.

Ella is a sixteen year old girl who has dealt with bullies the majority of her time at school. Instead of belonging to a wealthy family like many of her peers, she got into Clayton on a scholarship, and the kids won't let her forget it. Most of the bullying has been verbal, but nothing comes close to what happens this time. The darkness consumes her, and that's when the dreams begin.
Ella feels as though she is going insane, but she doesn't know who she can trust. Who can she talk to without making things worse? Confiding in her best friend, Kyla eases her mind for a while, but then she starts acting weird too. When things start happening that she can't explain, she doesn't know where to turn.

I do like to be kept on my toes, and this book kept me guessing for the first half, maybe two thirds of the book before I was certain what was happening. I quite liked the last few chapters and the unraveling of everything. Definitely an author I'd like to read more of
In case you don't know this about me, I am a horror fan. I love horror, psychological thrillers... Anything of the sort. When I saw Dark Shadows on Netgalley (THANKS NETGALLEY!), I thought this would be the perfect book for me. It has all of the elements that I love, and the cover is pretty darn creepy. Unfortunately, it just didn't hit the right notes for me, and I found myself pretty disappointed.

The book starts with Ella being shoved into a janitor's closet at the end of the school day, and being locked in overnight. She isn't found until the next morning when the janitor shows up and finds her unresponsive, with her nails shredded from trying to claw her way out. That night at home, she has her first dream of being locked in a box and not being able to escape. The next morning, she wakes up with tiny little cuts all over her arm, a razor lying in the bathroom, and no memory of hurting herself. Her best friend Kyla wants her to get revenge on the boys who did this to her, but Ella refuses. They are rich and popular, so they will only get away with it, and it will make things worse for Ella. After another incident with one of the kids from school, Ella wakes up the next morning covered in blood, and hears the news that the boy is dead. Things get progressively strange for Emma, and she doesn't know what is happening to her. Is she responsible, or is Kyla protecting her, regardless of the cost?

In theory, this sounds like a book that would be fantastic for me. In execution, it just fell short. The pacing was very slow, with the incidents happening only randomly enough to keep me interested. The writing style itself isn't bad, but it doesn't flow quite smoothly, and there was a lot of editing down that could have been done. As far as the characters go, I just couldn't connect with any of them, and I think that is ultimately what created such a disconnect for me. Ella was a shell of a character who didn't have much personality. She cried a lot, but was never proactive, just set back and let Kyla or her mom or Doctor tell her how to think or feel. When revelations were made towards the end of the story, Ella accepted everything very well, barely blinking an eye. And the big reveal towards the end, while it was a good one, was easily predictable and the reveal was very anti-climatic.

While this story could have brought chills to the reader, I feel like it was a big miss. There wasn't enough emotion driving the story, and there was no characterization or growth to speak of. I think the author has potential to create a fantastic story, but the elements didn't come together in a way that worked for me. Now, don't let my review keep you from reading the story. Please! There are a ton, and I mean a TON, of positive reviews out there for Dark Shadows. The story has worked for a lot of people. Unfortunately, I am the odd woman out on this one. But give it a shot, because you might be one of the ones that loved it!
When a group of high school bullies lock Ella Raimi inside of a janitorial closet on a Friday night and leave her there she isn’t found until Saturday morning. Ella is in a state of shock when found and as she comes out of it she insists she OK and doesn’t want to involve the police about her bullies.

Ella only has one friend, Kyla. Kyla stays with Ella after her incident and tries to care for her but shortly after the closet incident Ella begins to have horrible nightmares and find she wakes up to finding things have happened and no memory of them. Is Kyla somehow to blame? Is Ella doing these things in her sleep??

An excellent psychological thriller that pulls you in from the first moments of Ella being locked up in the closet and won’t let go until the end. I did however figure out the ending fairly early on but even with guessing I still didn’t want to put the story down until done.

Ella pulled me into her story from the first few moments just knowing that she would have such an interesting story to tell and definitely was not disappointed in the least. A rather emotional roller coaster that even when finishing a part of me is still thinking noooo I want to read more about Ella and what will happen. Always find it good to have a story or characters that it’s hard to let them go when finished.

Great fast paced read that was tough to put down until finished.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
